Cliffe House Visit by Class 3

Cliffe House is an old Victorian house used by school children for residential school visits.

One of the best bits was all the free time we had. This is a picture of a den built by some of our pupils.

On our visit we looked at how Shepley has grown over the years. We also played some team games. You can find out more about them on this page. We also learned how to read maps and we had a treasure hunt around the grounds.

  Tower game

To play this game you need a measuring ruler and small pieces of wood.

The object of the game is to build the tallest tower you can, using the blocks of wood.

You are only allowed to measure the tower three times.

It was quite hard to build the tower and you have to work as a team otherwise everyone gets in the way or the tower gets knocked over.

If you’re in a team try to be patient with everyone in your group and take turns so everybody gets a go. First of all stack the blocks on top of each other so they try not to fall down. If they do happen to fall down then start again but remember you’ve only got 10 minutes to finish.

Good Luck!

Egg Race

To play this game you need;

A 60cm pipe per player,

1 plastic or rubber ball shaped like an egg,

And a plastic tub and a basket.

The aim of the game is to get the plastic or rubber ball to the basket without dropping it by only using your tubes. You cannot touch the ball but can block both ends of the tube so the ball doesn’t fall out. You have ten minutes to successfully finish your game. It is not a tricky game as long as you  concentrate. You should work together to get more points which the teacher on your game will be handing out and they will be added to your final score. To score you need to get the ball all the way from the plastic tub to the basket. If you do drop it you have to go back to the beginning and try it again. If you have enough time you might be able to get over there without holding the ends of the tube.

Have fun!

Stepping stones

To play this game you’ll need 6 square boards, 2 pieces of wood at both ends to mark out the beginning and end of the swamp.

The object of the game is to get your team across the imaginary swamp using the boards without falling off into the swamp. If anyone in your team falls off you lose points.

Once you get across once with 6 boards and collected them in you try getting back with 5 boards.

If you complete the activity with 6 boards you get 10 points. You can also get bonus points for teamwork such as helping each other and not shouting at each other. Our team finished the activity using 6 boards, 5 boards, 4 boards and 3 boards. We lost a few points because some of our team members fell into the imaginary swamp.

 Ski Walk Game

What you need:

4 planks of wood the same size, with 5 ropes in a line on each

How to play:

First split your team in half and mark out a straight line and an obvious start and finish pole. One of the teams starts at one side and the other team start at the other. Create 2 skies with your plank of woods and make sure the ropes are opposite, then get your teams onto the skies so your feet are in the ropes like you are going skiing, and grip your hands to the top of the rope. Next work out a pattern to get your teams from one pole to the other pole. You only have 10 minutes to complete this game.

Good Luck!!!

How you get points:

You get points out of 10 for team work and game completion. You can get bonus points if you finish and you still have some time by trying to do the same thing again.

On the last day we all went outside and had a treasure hunt around the ground of Cliffe House.

First we had to learn how to read a map. Then we set off to find the treasure. We did this event in groups of three or four people. The event was very challenging. But everyone worked as a team and completed the activity. We were so good everyone got a prize!
