Super Learning Day

On the 12th July the whole school took part in a Super Learning Day. This gave us chance to try activities we don't usually do in school.
First of all we looked at a picture by Renoir called Luncheon of the Boating Party. We had to imagine we were inside the picture and think about what we could see and hear.
We spent the rest of the day doing lots of different activities which we don?t usually have chance to do in school. At the end of the day we all came back together to share what we had learnt.
You can read more about these further down the page.
I thought the day was fantastic.
We decided to recreate the sort of invitation that Renoir would send to his friends to invite them to a luncheon party in 1881. First of all we were given a piece of paper that said; monsieur/madam (followed by your name) cordially invites you to the luncheon party on the river Seine July 10th 1881.
We coloured in the invitation and then we wrapped the invitation inside a doyley plate. Finally we sealed it with a sticker.
It was interesting to learn how people communicated in the 1800's.
We made wind chimes with plant pots, shells and bits of string.
First we chose a partner and then we each chose six shells with holes in
them. Then we were given a length of string and told to tie a knot at the end.
and thread it through one of the shells with a hole in it.
When the first shell had been threaded we had to tie another knot about an inch and a half away from the other knot and then we threaded the second shell.
We repeated this process until we had used all of our six chosen shells each of the partners in our group made one of these .
Then with the help of a teacher we stuck the lengths of string to the inside of the plant pot with a glue gun. We did not touch it because we could have been burned by the hot glue. Then we were asked to choose two shell s each and then again with the help of a teacher we stuck them to the side of the plant pot .
We had to get a cross an imaginary river using p.e. mats and without touching the ground. First of all we could use four mats. Eventually we had to do it with only two mats. With nine people in my group it was very difficult for us.
We had to make a bridge with two planks of wood and milk crates to cross an imaginary river without stepping in mud or falling in the river. We had to work as team. First we put some milk crates down where the mud was. Next we balanced a plank of wood on the crates. One person had to stand on the plank to put a crate on the other side. The rest of the team had to stand on the other end of the plank to balance it.
It was good fun working out how to build the bridge and we really had to wotk as a team.
